Chittagong uprising was one of the few chapters in the history of Indian freedom, which made huge impacts, but somehow, the true story is not mentioned like the others ones (Subhash Chandra Bose and Rani Lakshmi Bai).


The movie starts with Abhishek Bachchan in the lead role, he plays as ‘Sen’, fondly called by his school students as ‘Masterda’. Deepika plays the famous character of freedom fighter, Kalpana Dutta, who jumps in the freedom fire after tolerating much.


Sen is a highly motivating school teacher and he leads a student band of 64, more than students, they are revolutionaries. Every single student realizes the need for freedom and their Masterda, further instigates them to get it, without fail.


The movie in its first half shows the plans of the students and Masterda, they build an army and plans to launch five simultaneous attacks on strongly held Britishers. The areas where they plan to attack are Chiitagong, cantonment area and telegraph office.

Ashutosh Gowariker has been able to show the spark required in the movie to a certain extent, the acting by Masterda and his students is eye-catching. The movie though, doesn’t entertain you instantly, but over a period of time, it evokes the patriotic feeling, meanwhile the thought of the biggest chapters of freedom fighting in India, neutralities the tough efforts put by the children and their master.


The movie is based on Manini Chatterjee’s book ‘Do and Die: The Chittagong Uprising 1930 – 34’. The chapters hold high importance with respect to freedom fighter, Kalpana Dutt, as it was a rare mention of a woman coming into picture.


Sikander Kher also plays a good role as one of the main supporters of Abhishek, in the second half, Deepika comes into picture, due to her own passion for freedom, she comes in contact with Sen. There are even instances of a love-story between the two, set in a Bengali backdrop, here the director starts becoming typically Bollywood, but soon realizes the importance of sticking to the story line.


The attacks however on the Britishers couldn’t shake their foundations, but gives a platform of inspirations to the other fighters. Audiences will feel more patriotic, moved and charged in the last 40 minutes. It shows the climax of the movie, in which everyone fights in a team.


At last, the narrations in the movie end it and highlight the importance of one of the important chapters of freedom fighting: ‘The Chittagong Uprising, 1930'. It is advisable to see the movie for those, who are looking to turn back the hidden pages in the Indian history, well needless to say, Deepika seems more confident than Abhishek, but still the movie is better than ‘Raavan’ for the actor.
